At the April 5th regular monthly meeting of the Board of Uptown Saint John Inc. the Board decided that they would be looking for another group or individuals to take the Paramount Theatre Project forward. “The Paramount has been a priority of the Board for a year and a half now and a lot of work has been accomplished to raise the profile of this project in the community” said President Matt Alexander.
A business plan was completed in the fall of 2010 and a variety of efforts have been made to raise awareness and funding to repurpose the theatre as a multiuser entertainment complex. The idea that the King’s Square area could become a ‘Performing Arts Precinct’ was identified in a 2008 strategy on how to leverage the cultural assets located in the uptown. In addition to the business plan, Uptown Saint John Inc. commissioned architectural drawings and engineering reports on the proposed concept and the condition of the building.
The Board continues to be firmly supportive of efforts to revitalize the King’s Square area and will support initiatives that will realize investment in this important area of the uptown. “The King’s Square area has tremendous potential to become the vibrant area it once was – an area largely responsible for the “Uptown’s” name, said Peter Asimakos, General Manager of Uptown Saint John Inc.
